Emo ego

Ever since I heard "Hands Down" I've been a pretty big fan of Dashboard Confessional. But after reading this article I'm not so sure. Maybe it's just the quotes the writer decided to use, but Chris Carrabba sounds like an ego-maniac: "I've worked with the guys more, the band mates I have are such solid players that they can do anything that I envision," Carrabba says. "They understand that this is so personal to me that I'm the catalyst of these ideas and they kind of concede at every point to what my vision of the song is without blowing smoke, which is awesome because it's rare that people would work so well together." Then again, maybe I shouldn't trust a publication that can't even use punctuation correctly.

Well, our team has just proved that we don't need big goals to get high scoring games. Unfortunately, the high score was not in our favor. Althought I made lots of saves, we suffered our worse loss ever: 8-0. I'm placated somewhat by the fact that we were playing Broomball For Beginners, one of (if not) the best teams on the ice, but we've played them before and held them to a 3-0 win. I'm not sure exactly what happened this time, but it whatever it was, it didn't work.

High score

After using standard hockey goals for God-only-knows-how-long, the intramural department has decided to buy regulation broomball nets. The new nets are approximately one foot taller and one foot wider. If the regulation nets and frames aren't available soon enough, apparently we'll be using soccer goals, which, by comparison, are freaking huge. New season starts next week, so we'll see what happens with the new goals. My job is definitely going to be a bit tougher, but we should see a few more points scored on both sides of the ice.

As if there aren't enough problems with privacy already, Applied Digital Solutions has developed an implantable chip that can be used for any number of things. The article states that the chip could be used to prevent identity theft, but the thing is constantly emitting a signal. How hard would it be to build your own receiver and decode the transmissions?

This is an incredible flash presentation by three Danish students about Russian soldiers in Chechnya. Simple, but very moving.

360degrees is an interesting look at the criminal justice system from many angles. For each POV there is a corresponding QTVR of that person's work/living area, be it a cell, office, living room or execution room.

Well, I'm trying to update the template for the blog, but I'm having some problems getting archive to work right.

In other news, our broomball team lost the last two games of the season, putting us at 3-5-2. Then we got eliminated in the first round of playoffs. Oh well. The next season starts in a week or so, and we've made some changes to our roster. The broomball page will be up and running soon.

Lost tonight. New record: 3-3-2. Two more games in regular season. In the meantime, check out the new broomball page.

Still above .500

Another shutout last night. Unfortunately, it was a shutout for both sides, so another tie goes on the record. However, at 3-2-2, our record still hasn't fallen below .500. Only three more games in the regular season, and then it's single-elimination playoff time. I don't think our team has ever made it past round 1 of the playoffs. All of our playoff games have ended in overtime or a shootout, though. We'll see what happens.

3-2-1 Contact

OK, this isn't really about the educational TV show. Rather, it's notification of our win last night, which makes our overall record 3-2-1. Nothing in the game is really worth mentioning. I didn't have a lot of action since the other team's offense couldn't really make anything happen. There were a few shots on goal, but none that I was very worried about. Next game is Tuesday night.

Although the team we played was called "Broomball for Beginners," they were far from first-timers. They scored two goals in the first five minutes, but after that we held them off. Unfortunately, our offense was no match for their teamwork and passing skills (something we need to work on). That puts our record at 2-2-1. Not a bad start, especially since the two teams who've beat us are the two best in the league. There's still quite a number of games left in the season. If we get our offense together, we'll have a good chance when playoffs come around. As it is, I think we'll be able to maintain a .500 or better for the regular season.

My post yesterday was incorrect. The official start for my novel will be 12:00:01 a.m. on November 1, local time. That means, that no matter what time zone you're in, you start at the stroke of midnight.

It's on. I just signed up for NaNoWriMo. At the end of November, I'll be able to enter conversations by saying something like, "Oh, that's what I wrote about in my first novel." Starting at 11 p.m. on Halloween (the official start time is midnight PST) I need to write 1,666 words a day (about five double-spaced pages). Who's with me?
